Citrullus lanatus
A barrel-shaped watermelon with red flesh, which used to be very popular and widespread in the USA.
A watermelon developed in South Carolina in 1964 that used to be very popular and widespread in the USA. The flesh is red throughout and therefore very sweet. The melons ripen yellow-green at first and later become bright green with a grey mesh surface. The elongated, almost barrel-shaped form of Charleston Gray melons, which are around 60cm long and weigh around 10-15kg per fruit, is particularly striking. Cultivation in Germany, especially in warmer regions, is very successful outdoors.
